North Italy on MTB:
Northern Italy’s stunning transition zone where the Alps meet the Mediterranean climate. The area around the lake—spanning Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino—offers some of Europe’s most dramatic and diverse mountain biking terrain.
The northern shore, particularly around Riva del Garda and Arco, is the epicenter of the region’s MTB scene. Here you’ll find everything from technical alpine singletrack descending from Monte Baldo to the famous lakeside trails like the Sentiero del Ponale—a spectacular path carved into cliffsides with breathtaking views over the water.
The riding ranges from beginner-friendly lakeside paths to expert-level downhill tracks. The area’s unique geography means you can climb into proper alpine terrain above 2,000 meters, then descend through vineyards and olive groves near sea level, all in a single ride. The climate is remarkably mild year-round, making it rideable even in winter.
Popular spots include the Tremalzo Pass for epic climbing, the Val di Ledro trails for flow and variety, and the bike parks around Monte Baldo accessible by cable car. The entire region has embraced cycling culture, with excellent infrastructure, shuttles, guides, and bike-friendly accommodations. It’s essentially a mountain biker’s paradise with Italian food and lake views as a bonus

Route
Starting from the lakeside towns, you’ll climb nearly 1,800 meters through switchbacks and technical terrain to reach the windswept Bocca di Tremalzo pass at 1,650m. The ascent is relentless but rideable on an e-bike, winding through forests and emerging into stark, dramatic alpine scenery.
The reward is the infamous Tremalzo descent—a technical masterpiece featuring exposed rocky sections, tight switchbacks carved into cliff faces, and sustained steep gradients that demand precise line choice and confident bike handling. This isn’t a flow trail; it’s a test of skill where loose rocks, sudden drops, and narrow passages keep you fully engaged for nearly 1,000 vertical meters.
Expect 50-70km total distance depending on your route variation, with stunning views across Lake Garda and the Dolomites. The terrain is remote and committing—bring spare batteries, tools, and be prepared for rapidly changing alpine weather. This ride combines the physical endurance of a major climb with the technical demands of expert-level descending. Not for the faint of heart, but unforgettable for those ready to take it on.
